You know the feeling. You’ve opened the door to a room in which there is a meeting in progress, and you were not supposed to be there. You’re embarrassed and you make yourself small as you quickly exit the room. That feeling—of not being welcome, not belonging—persists for many of our students in school and is impacting their education.
With an effect size of .46, belonging is worth our time and attention as educators. In his powerful webinar, Dr. Doug Fisher delves into the research around belonging, the feeling that we are part of a larger group that values, respects, and cares for us and to which we feel that we have something to contribute. Adapting and adopting the latest research in his presentation, Dr. Fisher will:
- Discuss data showing that students bring their full selves to school and are much more likely to engage when they know that they belong.
- Detail the actions that teachers and school leaders can take to create a sense of belonging in school
- Highlight the 11 dimensions that can be used to create change and increase belonging.
Participants will gain a greater understanding not only of the power of belonging but walk away with tools to create a sense of belonging within their school communities to ensure that all students feel welcome and connected.
